Meet Melissa: Planning and Regulatory Officer

Melissa: Planning and Regulatory Officer at the District Council of Streaky Bay.

"This journey has boosted my confidence, and helped me to believe I can achieve far more than I ever thought possible."

My experience at the council has been transformative. I started working in the Tourist Information Centre, then advanced to this role within 2 years.

Over time, I’ve acquired a diverse skillset and developed a deep understanding of community development and regulatory affairs. I address the community’s planning and development enquiries and promptly handle compliance issues as they surface.

My work involves research, effective communication with residents and government agencies, and making sure that every project and operation meets legal and environmental standards. I also issue and renew permits for the use of council land.

It’s my passion to contribute to positive change and enhance people’s wellbeing. I decided to work for the council because I had a strong desire to make a significant difference in the community.

I didn’t have much knowledge about the field when I started, but I’m now pursuing a Diploma in Local Government (Planning), which highlights my commitment to continuous learning and professional growth in local government.

"I have a genuine passion for my job and feel fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful people. It’s incredibly uplifting to have the support of my colleagues."

This journey has boosted my confidence, and helped me to believe I can achieve far more than I ever thought possible. I am grateful for the opportunities working for council has presented, as they have not only enriched my professional life but also given me a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

I have a genuine passion for my job and feel fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful people. It’s incredibly uplifting to have the support of my colleagues.

Balancing the need to uphold regulations with empathetic and effective communication can be demanding, but it’s an important part of my job to ensure community wellbeing and standards are met. I cherish the times when I can genuinely help people and they know I care.

If you’re considering working for council, don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Go for it!
