Apprenticeships

As an apprentice at a local council, you’ll combine on the job training with study and gain a trade qualification that’s recognised nationally.

You’ll develop technical and practical skills while earning an income which could get you the career you want.

You can complete an apprenticeship in 3 or 4 years, depending on the type of work you choose. When you finish an apprenticeship, you’ll become a qualified in your trade.

How to get an apprenticeship

Councils hire and train apprentices through the Government Apprenticeship Scheme.

An apprenticeship with council can be a great move for a rewarding career. After you’ve completed an apprenticeship, you’ll also be eligible to apply for roles within council.

There are many benefits to doing an apprenticeship with a council:

  • be paid while you study
  • get on the job experience
  • opportunities for career pathways.

The Government Apprenticeship Scheme takes care of recruitment and placement of all apprenticeships. Skills SA coordinates the recruitment and placement of South Australian Public Sector or local government apprentices.

Eligibility

Anyone seeking an apprenticeship with the South Australian government is eligible to apply.  There are no restrictions on an applicant's age.

How to apply
