As a council member

If you are passionate about your local community and want to make a positive impact, you may consider becoming a council member. Council members are also known as a councillor or elected member.

Becoming a council member is an opportunity to contribute to positive changes in your community. It is a rewarding and challenging role which requires commitment, responsibility and accountability.

As a council member, you can help create a future that you and your community can be proud of and enjoy.

How to become a council member

You must be nominated and elected to become a council member. This process can only occur during a periodic council election or supplementary election.

The next periodic council election is scheduled for 2026.

No special qualifications or experience is required to become a council member. You can nominate for council no matter your experience, qualifications, religion, race, gender or profession.

In South Australia, there are around 700 council members across 68 councils. If you are eligible to run as a council member, you are also eligible to run for mayor.

Being a councillor or mayor is a big commitment and is also very rewarding.
