Meet Penny: General Manager, Prosperity

My role includes coastal management, sustainability, climate change, waste management services, crown land, economic development and planning.

The role enables me to work closely with community to scope and develop projects, create and implement strategic plans, protect our environment, and work with businesses, residents and visitors to improve the overall liveability of our area. There is nothing more rewarding than working on the ground with your team or community to achieve great outcomes.

I started in council as a Civil Construction/Administration trainee, after leaving school. I was attracted to the council by the opportunity to work both indoors and outdoors. I worked within the Infrastructure Services area in various roles and councils until 2016 when I made a career change into Community and Economic Development.

In my 20-plus years of working in local government, I think the most crucial skills I’ve developed are communication and empathy – both are needed for successful community outcomes.

I don't think I’ve ever felt a bigger sense of achievement than when we delivered a recent skate park project. Hearing the excitement and seeing the faces of the kids on opening day made all the hard work worth it!
