I lead the team that manages building and development approvals, inspections, fire safety and pool fencing. We ensure that these issues and many others meet the National Construction Code requirements and are energy efficient and safe. We take a collaborative approach with residents to ensure they have a safe and compliant home.
The work our team performs is often overlooked, but it’s important and we champion safety in our community. If we do our job well, it’s usually invisible, but it could save someone’s life.
I like the attention to detail in my role. I spend time looking at plans or going out on site, sometimes focusing on small details that could have a big impact. The industry is always evolving as new codes are released. We might get a question we’ve never had before and we get to investigate and learn.
"Local government does graduate programs really well, and opportunities for career growth in council are great."
After I completed a Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics, I joined the building policy unit at Plan SA. I then completed a really valuable 6-month Building Officer cadetship at the City of Playford.
Local government does graduate programs really well, and opportunities for career growth in council are great. At the City of Tea Tree Gully, I started as Building Officer and was promoted to Team Leader within 2 years.
Local government is a friendly environment that is always busy, but collaborative and there is support from other teams if we need. The work–life balance is great, too as I have set hours to manage my workload and the organisation ensures that our people take regular leave to ensure good wellbeing.
If you’re just coming out of uni, you should consider a start in local government. Work in council is fulfilling, the pay and conditions are good, and it’s secure. There’s great camaraderie, lots of things to learn, supportive management and good mentors. Give it a try!
