Murray Bridge Rail Bridge celebrates 100 years

12 November 2025
The Rural City of Murray Bridge will mark a century of the Murray Bridge Rail Bridge with a community celebration honouring its history and enduring role in connecting South Australians.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge is inviting the community to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Murray Bridge Rail Bridge on Thursday 13 November 2025.

For a century, the rail bridge has stood as a symbol of connection, helping shape Murray Bridge’s identity and supporting South Australia’s transport network.

Originally known as Edwards Crossing, in 1878 the site became the first bridge over the Murray River.

The 1925 construction of the rail bridge reflected the region’s growing freight demands and its place as a key link between communities across the state and beyond.

The centenary celebration will be held at the Murray Bridge RSL, offering the perfect vantage point to admire the bridge and city skyline. Attendees will enjoy historical displays, guest speakers and the chance to reflect on the bridge’s enduring contribution to Murray Bridge and South Australia.

Mayor Wayne Thorley said the event was an opportunity to honour both local heritage and community pride.

“The Murray Bridge Rail Bridge has stood strong for 100 years - a testament to the hard work, engineering skill and vision that helped shape our region,” Mayor Thorley said.

“This milestone gives us the chance to come together, reflect on our shared history and celebrate the bridges that continue to connect our community.”
