South Australia's local libraries are special places filled with knowledge, creativity and a strong sense of community.

Councils across the state recognise their enormous importance, which is why they collectively invest $86 million annually into the running of local libraries.

Local Government Association President Dean Johnson said with 6.5 million people visiting SA libraries in-person every year – along with 10 million annually online – it’s clear why libraries are critically important to communities.

“Libraries aren’t just about borrowing books – they offer a diverse range of services and programs that assist people of all ages, backgrounds and life situations,” Mayor Johnson said.

“Libraries truly are the heart of communities, and for many people the services and technology available through libraries is essential for learning, creativity, exploring ideas, connecting with others and so much more.

“One of the top reasons for visiting libraries is to use the internet to access services and connect with friends.

“Almost 20% of South Australian households don’t have internet access, so this provides a vital link for them to social media, books and events, information and government services.”

Below, we explore why going to your local library in South Australia can make your life better in so many ways.

South Australia's libraries are leading the way in the digital revolution

They’ve changed to meet the needs of their communities and are much more than just buildings with books. These modern hubs have become centres of learning and exploration.

They have the latest technology, free Wi-Fi and digital resources. This means libraries are now, more than ever, important places for people to learn digital skills and become more comfortable with technology.

For students, the local library is a gateway to doing well in school and university. South Australia's local libraries have many educational materials, textbooks and online resources. They also have a lot of information that can help with research and studying.

Librarians are always there to help with questions and guide students on their educational journey.

Many libraries also have study rooms, computer labs and tutoring programs. This makes them great places to study for people of all ages.

They organise all kinds of programs and events that let people meet and make friends. Book clubs, author talks and creative workshops are just some of the fun things you can do at your local library.
