The best school holiday programs across SA this October

By term 3 school holidays, it’s safe to say that many parents and caregivers can feel like they’re out of good ideas for fun and affordable activities.

Councils coordinate a heap of cool kid and youth-friendly workshops and events across South Australia all holiday long. Even better, we’ve done the work for you by creating a list of SA councils running top-notch, fun holiday stuff.

City of Salisbury

Throughout their libraries, hubs and community centres, the City of Salisbury have almost guaranteed a boredom free October school holiday!

From pizza parties to tie dyeing, Salisbury council have got a school holiday activity for every interest.

Designed for babies to teens, Salisbury’s holiday schedule perfectly combines learning and fun. Like Palaeontology Rocks, where kids aged 4 to 7 help dig for fossils and discover dinosaurs. Or Retro Game Coding where young people aged 8 to 14 create classic pixel games of the past.

Book early to avoid disappointment as many sessions fill quickly.

City of Burnside

A regular on the school holiday scene, the City of Burnside have curated their popular offerings into a tailored list of creative and practical activities.

Check out the one-day accredited barista and food safety course offered to 15 to 25 year olds. Subsidised for residents of Burnside, this school holiday event is well timed for young people looking to work in hospitality or cafes in the coming months.

Or, for those between 10 and 18 years old and looking for an outdoor activity with a little quirkiness, the Come ‘n Try Lawn Bowls might be right up their alley.

Adelaide Hills Council

Did you know, if you can draw something, it can be created using a 3D pen? Well, kidlings could very well find out at the Adelaide Hills Council 3D Pen Fun workshop. From brooches to picture frames, kids can create sculptures using a 3D pen. Everything is supplied – just bring imagination!

Creative kids aged 5 and over might also enjoy the lovely Spring Flower Lantern workshop. Held in Gumeracha, kids will create a beautiful lantern to keep, using pressed flowers.

City of Marion

The City of Marion council staff are so into school holidays, they created a special School Holiday Guide bursting with fun stuff to do. Spread across Marion’s Neighbourhood Community Centres, it’s safe to say there’s something for almost every young person this October.

Such as the Bricks 4 Kidz Remote Cars activity where children aged 5 plus can build a Lego remote car. Or how about a Henna Workshop where kids aged 8 to 13 can learn the basics of applying henna? And for the little groovers and movers there’s the Hip Hop Workshop.

Town of Gawler

Gawler have got a range of on-point October holiday activities all set for young people, whether they live in the council area or elsewhere. And they know their stuff! For youth who want to share their voice, the Gawler Broadcasting Association is hosting a training session on how to create a Podcast.

Kids who love scary movies will revel in the shock factor of the Special FX workshop. This activity dives right into how to make the gory wounds and scars seen on the big screen. Just in time for Halloween!

Meanwhile, for those who like the world of imaginary campaigns and crusades, a Dungeons and Dragons adventures awaits! Held in the Gawler Youth Space Civic Centre, bookings are essential.

City of Charles Sturt

With one of the most comprehensive school holiday programs, Charles Sturt council promise there’s always something fun and educational happening for kids of every age. Held in their community centres and libraries across the council area, these creative workshops and events are mostly free or very affordably priced.

First up in the ‘free’ department is a fun and interactive reading of My Purrfect Pet Book by Hayley Morton. Following the tale of a child who wants a new pet, children will hear interesting animal facts and try out yoga poses.

The Charles Sturt School Holiday Sports Program is also back on, with kids aged 3 to 17 invited to try new or different sports activities for free. A range of sports are on offer, from badminton to indoor soccer to fencing. This active sports holiday program is (almost) guaranteed to tucker out everyone, from toddler to teen.
