Coastal walks, crafts and collaging: Ten standout Nature Festival experiences

This year’s Nature Festival is blooming with beautiful events and activities to inspire and grow your connection with nature.

From guided walking tours to nature craft to gardening, there’s an experience for all ages and interests.

Held from 1 to 15 October, we’ve spotlighted just a few of the standout sessions hosted by local councils across SA as part of this year’s Nature Festival. Check out the full list of events to see what’s happening in your local area.

Adelaide Hills Council

Creating a Collage with Natural Materials

Designed for adults, this workshop will get you closer to nature and help you connect with your inner artist. You’ll practise mindfulness while using natural materials like leaves, bark and sand to create your own unique collage.

This free event has limited spaces.

City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters

Along the River

Immerse yourself in nature and reconnect to the great outdoors at this calming experience. Hear about the native bird life, wetlands and walking tracks within Felixtow Reserve while surrounded by towering river gums.

Interactive activities include touring the river and making sunflower bee bombs or bee hotels.

Use the self-guided tour book while you meander along the river, and hear stories about the rich local culture. This event is free, but bookings are required.

City of Charles Sturt

Community Gardening Bus Tours

Hop on the council bus and experience the beautiful and productive community gardens in the City of Charles Sturt. Designed and maintained by the community, you’ll discover the benefits of gardening and how to be part of a community garden group.

Where: Civic Centre rear car park, 72 Woodville Rd, Woodville SA 5011

When: Saturday October 14 at 9:30am and 1:00pm, Sunday October 15 at 9:30am

Small spaces gardening on a budget.

Learn how to assess your space, tips for watering, and how you can keep your plants growing strong in this practical workshop. Designed for people with all levels of gardening experience, you’ll take away new info on how to grow a small garden no matter the budget.

City of Port Adelaide Enfield

Tides of Change: Coastal Climate Awareness Guided Walk

Take an educational and relaxing walk along the coastline of Semaphore. Guided by science educator David, you’ll learn how climate change and rising sea levels impact local beaches and what is being done to prepare for the future.

Magical Garden Craft for Kids

This delightful workshop gives primary school-aged kids the opportunity to decorate a terracotta pot for a special native plant. They will also create and decorate miniature mythical characters such as fairies, elves and mushrooms to live with their native pot plant.

Take a Walk with Us!

Take a journey through nature and visit new places at the Kapunda Library virtual reality nature tour. For people of all abilities, this 3D experience will take you around the world via virtual reality goggles. You could wander through Antarctica, head to a tropical beach, then pop over to the Pyramids of Egypt, all in one session.

City of Tea Tree Gully library

Bringing birds into your backyard

For those with an interest in creating bird-friendly gardens, this event will help you design an outdoor space that will attract local birds. For beginners to fully-fledged bird enthusiasts, you will discover the benefits of bringing birds into your garden. Bookings are essential.

City of Holdfast Bay

Nest Box workshop

Ideal for families, small groups or individuals, this practical workshop will help you discover how to support our native wildlife. Learn the importance of natural hollows, the ideal position for nesting boxes and more, before building a nest box for your own backyard.

City of Burnside

The Spring Art of Flower Pressing for Youth

The City of Burnside are bringing the art of flower pressing to young people aged 10 to 18 years. Guided by Tory from the Green Room Adelaide, young people will create a framed flower artwork to take home.

Whyalla Public Library

Mangroves of Eyre Peninsula - Forests of the Sea

Described as ‘a mixture of hands-on experiences and ocean craft-ivities,’ this event aims to inspire and connect participants with the amazing mangroves. Families with young people aged 7 to 14 years will experience the sea life of Whyalla through a combination of science and art.

City of Salisbury

Salisbury Nature Day

Children are invited to bring their adult along to this exciting outdoor adventure experience in Carisbrooke Park. In partnership with Green Adelaide, you can enjoy a range of activities including nature bingo, barky boats, orienteering and a walk ‘n talk with Frogs SA. Gumboots are recommended!
