Time to renew your pet’s registration

12 August 2025
Pet owners across South Australia are reminded to renew their dog or cat registration by 31 August.

All dogs and cats must be registered through the statewide Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) database. The system allows owners to register new pets, renew existing registrations, update details and report lost or found animals.

Why registration matters

Renewing your pet’s registration is a vital step in keeping animals safe and reuniting lost pets with their families.

When you log in to renew or register, take a moment to check your pet’s microchip number, contact details and ownership information. Updating these records helps ensure your furry friend can be returned quickly if they go missing.

You must also update DACO if your dog:

  • Has died
  • Is missing for more than 72 hours
  • Has a new owner
  • Has been surrendered to a rescue organisation

Fees and discounts

Registration fees vary across councils and can range from $15 to $85 per year. Check your local council’s website for exact costs in your area.

You may be eligible for a discount if:

  • You have an assistance dog
  • You hold a concession card
  • Your dog is desexed
  • Your dog has completed certified training

Most South Australian councils do not charge for cat registration, although cats must still be microchipped and desexed, with this information recorded in DACO.

Some councils also offer extra support. The District Council of Yankalilla is helping eligible cat owners through a free desexing program, delivered via the National Desexing Network and participating vets. The initiative aims to make responsible pet ownership more accessible for residents experiencing financial hardship.

Don’t miss the deadline

If you renew after 31 August, you may incur a late fee and possibly an expiation notice. Councils enforce these rules under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

To renew or update your details, visit Dogs and Cats Online or contact your local council.
