Pondi Playspace set to transform Sturt Reserve
The project will transform one of Murray Bridge's most popular community spaces into a vibrant destination for play, learning and connection.
Inspired by Ngarrindjeri Dreaming stories, culture and Country, the award-winning design has been developed through a partnership between the Rural City of Murray Bridge and Ngarrindjeri Ruwe Empowered Communities (NREC).
At the heart of the new playspace will be a giant Pondi, the Ngarrindjeri name for Murray Cod, which will form an iconic climbing and play structure overlooking the riverfront.
Families can also look forward to a flying fox, swings, slides, sand play, trampolines and accessible play equipment designed to welcome children of all ages and abilities.
The precinct will feature sheltered seating, barbecues, drinking fountains, public artworks, lighting, landscaped gardens and an outdoor classroom space for learning and community activities.
The project replaces ageing playground equipment that has served the community for more than 20 years. It also supports Council's commitment to reconciliation by creating a space that shares and celebrates the cultural heritage of the Ngarrindjeri people.
Mayor Wayne Thorley said the playspace will become a landmark attraction for both locals and visitors.
“The Pondi Playspace project is something we can all be proud of here in Murray Bridge,” Mayor Thorley said.
“Not only will it become the place that local families meet and children play, but this design considers all ages, connects us to our Ngarrindjeri culture and makes a statement about how much we value our iconic riverfront precinct.”
The Pondi Playspace forms part of the broader Sturt Reserve Master Plan, which aims to enhance the riverfront precinct and support the future growth of Murray Bridge. In addition to the playspace itself, the project includes major site improvements such as landscaping, footpaths, lighting, stormwater infrastructure and upgraded public amenities.
When complete, the Pondi Playspace will provide a unique destination where culture, recreation and community come together on the banks of the River Murray.
