Major aquatic centre redevelopment underway at Payneham

24 June 2026
A major redevelopment of the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre is transforming the popular community facility into a modern aquatic leisure centre, with new pools, waterslides and accessible amenities.

Construction is progressing on the redevelopment of the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre, bringing the community one step closer to a state-of-the-art aquatic leisure destination.

The project will transform the existing facility into a modern recreation and aquatic centre designed to meet the needs of residents of all ages and abilities. Construction is expected to take approximately two years, with completion on track for late 2026.

The upgraded facility will include a 10-lane, 50-metre outdoor pool, an eight-lane, 25-metre indoor pool and an indoor learner's pool designed to support swimming education and water confidence programs.

Families and young visitors will enjoy a 14-metre waterslide tower featuring two waterslides, along with a zero-depth waterplay area designed for children to safely explore and play.

Beyond the aquatic facilities, the centre will feature multipurpose meeting rooms, shaded areas, picnic seating and barbeque facilities, creating a space for community gatherings.

Accessibility has been a key focus throughout the design. Every pool will provide all-access entry through ramps or lifts, while aquatic wheelchairs will be available for public use to support people with disability and mobility challenges.

The redevelopment has been supported by a $5.6 million contribution from the South Australian Government through the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program.

When completed, the new aquatic centre will provide year-round opportunities for recreation, health, wellbeing and community connection, while creating a modern facility that can serve the community for decades to come.
