Oh hay! It’s a hay bale trail on the road to Beachport

23 November 2025
Wattle Range Council is taking a fun and creative approach to its Southern Ports Highway detour by unveiling the Scenic Range – Bale Trail.

Artistic volunteers from the Beachport Tourism Working Group, the Wattle Range Council and local schools, have been collaborating with landowners to create a large-scale hay trail along a detour route between Millicent to Beachport.

Wattle Range Council lobster The 8-minute detour was a necessary diversion while major road upgrades take place on the Southern Ports Highway.

Winding through an agricultural landscape of canola fields and green pastures, the team of volunteers decided to elevate the experience for travellers by transforming the landscape into open-air galleries filled with hay bale sculptures of surf life savers, crayfish, birds on a nest of hay ... and more.

The Scenic Range - Bale Trail will remain in place throughout the entire duration of the roadworks, which are expected to be completed in 2026.
