New community spaces taking shape in Walkerville

5 August 2025
Three major projects are transforming some of Walkerville’s most well-loved spaces, delivering better facilities for sport, recreation and the community.

The Bowling and Community Club, 39 Smith Street Recreation Centre and Oval are all being upgraded as part of Walkerville Council’s vision to support a vibrant, active and connected community, long into the future.

These redevelopments will collectively be the largest in the history of the Town of Walkerville – with the aim to create a modern sports and community hub for all ages, now and into the future.

Better facilities for sport, play and community events

The Walkerville Bowling and Community Club is getting a complete makeover. The old clubrooms have been demolished to make way for a modern, accessible facility.

Set to open in October 2025, the club upgrade will include a new modern facility for members of the Walkerville bowling club along with flexible spaces for community classes, programs and events.

Introducing The W – Walkerville’s new Recreation Centre

The 39 Smith Street site is also being redeveloped into a modern recreation centre, named The W, following strong community input. The name was chosen through the YOU Name It! consultation, one of Council’s biggest community engagement activities to date.

The new centre will feature a multi-purpose indoor stadium with two courts for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, gymnastics and dance, as well as a kiosk, change rooms and meeting rooms.

The council expects to open the new facility by the end of 2025.

Walkerville Sports Club

The sports club is also getting an upgrade, with a renovation of the existing building to bring facilities up to current sporting expectations.

Walkerville Oval to open space improvements

The popular Walkerville Oval open space will also be upgraded with the construction of brand-new outdoor sports infrastructure within the Oval precinct.

Four new oval light poles have been added to meet AFL local standards and an electronic scoreboard has been erected, that can also be used for movie nights. The council is also replacing worn-out cricket nets, adding a new picnic and barbecue area, planting trees, upgrading seating and creating better paths for walking and cycling.

Projects shaped by the community

These projects are funded by the Town of Walkerville and the State Government and are part of Council’s long-term plan to improve local facilities and support a growing community. Hundreds of residents shared their ideas during recent consultation, helping shape the final designs.
