Mount Barker begins preparations for Town Square project in city centre revamp

23 March 2026
Construction is set to begin on Mount Barker’s new Town Square, creating a vibrant community space designed for events, connection and everyday use.

Mount Barker’s long awaited Town Square is moving into its next phase, with bulk earthworks set to begin on the city centre site.

Located between Hutchinson Street, Morphett Street, Stephen Street and Druids Avenue, the space will transform into a 2,000 square metre hub designed for both community events and everyday use.

Major construction is expected to begin in July 2026, with completion forecast for early 2027.

The new Town Square will feature a central boulevard, stage and performance lawn, flexible seating areas and an interactive space alongside hospitality.

A new plaza connection will link Hutchinson and Stephen Streets, improving access and creating room for larger events.

The design has been shaped through input from the community, with accessibility a key focus to ensure the space is welcoming for everyone.

Native and ornamental plantings, along with a major public artwork inspired by Mount Barker Summit, will add to the identity and character of the area.

Acting Mayor Rowan Voogt said the project marks an important step forward for the community.

“This project has been carefully planned and refined with input from our Council Members, Community Reference Group and the Peramangk Aboriginal Council,” Mayor Voogt said.

“We look forward to seeing people attending events, meeting friends, enjoying performances and making this space their own.”

The project forms part of the broader City Centre masterplan, which aims to support local jobs, investment and vibrant community spaces.

As works begin, elements from the former Pop Up Park have been relocated across the district, while public Wi-Fi will remain available within the CBD.

Once complete, the Town Square will provide a central place for the community to gather, celebrate and connect in the heart of Mount Barker.
