Loxton Waikerie celebrates local stories through art and history

11 May 2026
The District Council of Loxton Waikerie is bringing community stories to life through two projects that celebrate both young voices and local heritage.

In Loxton, SA Youth Week’s Street Stories project has transformed Edward and William Streets with 18 vibrant stobie pole art installations.

These vibrant artworks were created by Loxton High School students, who were mentored by artists from Loxton Parish Hall Gallery and supported by the Loxton Men’s Shed.

Mayor Norton acknowledged value of creating opportunities for young people to contribute to the life of the community.

“These artworks will leave a lasting impact on our streetscape while showcasing the creativity and perspectives of local youth” he said.

Supported by local artists and community groups, the project gave young people a platform to share their perspectives while creating lasting public art for the community to enjoy.

Council is also preserving an important part of the region’s history in Waikerie, following the recovery of the town’s Federation time capsule, originally buried in 2001.

While significant water damage impacted many items, preserved materials will be displayed at the Waikerie Library during History Month in May 2026, giving residents the chance to reconnect with local stories from the past.
