Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail gets green light with $7M funding

15 September 2025
Exciting news for South Australia’s wine lovers and nature enthusiasts, as the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail is officially on its way.

After years of planning and collaboration, the Australian Government has awarded Alexandrina Council a $7.06 million grant, thanks to the Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP), to bring the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail to life.

This transformative project will build a 2.8-kilometre shared-use trail, 1.8 meters wide, weaving through historic vineyards and scenic green spaces. The multi-use walking and cycling path will wind from the corner of Kent Town Road and Langhorne Creek Road near Bremerton Wines, through Memorial Park and Frank Potts Reserve, and finish at Bleasdale Winery.

The Discovery Trail is a community-led project years in the making. The community, supported by Alexandrina Council since 2020, the Langhorne Creek Grape and Wine Association, the Langhorne Creek Hub, and the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation, have co-designed this trail to celebrate the region’s unique culture, history, and landscapes.

Alexandrina Council Mayor Keith Parkes said the trail would create a hero tourism attraction for the region. “The 2.8km Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail linking cellar doors is going to be a beautiful, interesting, safe, and accessible way for visitors and locals to explore this pocket-sized historic wine region by foot or by bike,” Mayor Parkes said.

“It will enhance the visitor experience and encourage tourism in an environmentally-sensitive way.”

Alexandrina Council will project manage the delivery of the Discovery Trail which includes :

  • construction of a bituminised 2.85km, 1.8m wide shared use pathway
  • installation of new bridge
  • installation of pedestrian refuges
  • wayfinding signage
  • landscaping, plantings and irrigation
  • street furniture and safety bollards
  • intersection upgrades.

With funding secured, the council and  Project Partnership Group are now finalising a detailed delivery plan and timeline.
