City of Burnside expands successful weekly green bin trial
The City of Burnside’s weekly green organics trial has proven so successful that the trial has been extended. The results speak for themselves, with less rubbish going to landfill, greater environmental sustainability and cost savings for council.
The trial began in September 2024 in Beulah Park and the northern half of Kensington Gardens. From September 2025, the program expanded to Burnside’s Monday bin collection area, covering 2944 more households and 94 businesses.
In the trial, green bins are collected weekly, while red landfill bins move to a fortnightly schedule. Since commencing last year, landfill has been reduced by 200 tonnes compared to the previous financial year. This also results in financial impacts, as composting food and garden waste is around five times cheaper than sending it to landfill.
The service is expected to continue beyond the trial and could expand to more areas in the future.
