Restore local reefs with shell recycling at Glenelg Seafood Festival
13 May 2026
South Australians are being encouraged to keep an eye out for shell recycling bins at this week’s Sea to Shore Seafood Festival in Glenelg and help support vital marine restoration projects.
Run by fish habitat charity OzFish, people can donate used oyster, mussel and scallop shells, which are then reused in the restoration of local reefs.
The initiative offers a simple way for the community to contribute to healthier coastal ecosystems while reducing waste.
South Australia has lost more than 99 per cent of its native oyster reefs since the 1950s due to overharvesting and dredging. These reefs play an essential role in filtering water, improving marine habitats and supporting fish populations, seagrass and broader biodiversity.
By recycling shells, residents directly support the rebuilding of these important ecosystems.
