Meet your new best friend at Salisbury Dog Adoption Day

27 August 2026
The City of Salisbury is giving dogs in its care a chance to find new families at its upcoming Adoption Day, while helping more people discover the rewards of giving a pound dog a second chance.

Every year, the City of Salisbury collects about 420 dogs found wandering at large in public places. That works out to more than one dog a day that has escaped from home or become separated from its owner.

Council staff first check each dog for a registration disc and scan for a microchip. These identification measures help reunite lost pets with their owners.

About 17 per cent of dogs collected by Council are microchipped and can be quickly identified. Around 350 dogs each year are taken to the Pooraka Pound, which is jointly operated by the City of Salisbury and City of Tea Tree Gully.

The pound provides a safe place for dogs while staff work to reunite them with their families. About half of the dogs that enter the facility each year are collected by their owners.

For the remaining dogs, Council works to find suitable new homes and will host a Dog Adoption Day on Saturday 29 August.

The event is a meet and greet, so adoptions will not be finalised on the day. People interested in giving a dog a home can speak with staff about the next steps.

Adoption costs $250 and includes vaccination, desexing and parasite control.

If you're looking for a new family member, Adoption Day could be the perfect opportunity to meet a dog in need of a loving home.

You can also view dogs available for adoption or fostering through the City of Salisbury website.
