5 November 2026
Loxton and Waikerie will welcome more than 1,200 competitors for the 2028 South Australian Masters Games, giving the Riverland a chance to showcase its sporting clubs, local businesses and regional lifestyle.

The Riverland will take centre stage in South Australian sport in April 2028, with Loxton and Waikerie announced as hosts of the South Australian Masters Games.

The four-day event will run from 20 to 23 April and is expected to attract more than 1,200 participants from across Australia. It will be the first time the Games have been held in the Riverland since 2005.

The Games bring together people of different abilities who enjoy staying active, competing and connecting through sport. The event will give local residents the chance to watch a wide range of sporting activities close to home while showcasing the district’s clubs, volunteers and facilities.

The Games are expected to deliver an economic boost, with competitors and visitors using local accommodation, dining at cafes and restaurants and exploring Riverland attractions. The event could also encourage visitors to return to the region after the Games.

Council will work with local sporting clubs and associations over the coming months to develop the event program and identify opportunities for clubs to get involved.

The Games will give the Riverland a chance to welcome new visitors, celebrate local sporting talent and show why the region is a great place to live, visit and stay active.
