Little Library opens at the State Library

20 August 2026
A new space designed especially for children aged 0 to 11 is opening at the State Library of South Australia, giving young readers a place to discover books, play, explore and build a lifelong love of reading.

A new chapter for young readers is about to begin with the opening of Little Library at the State Library of South Australia this August.

Families are invited to celebrate the opening on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August 2026, with the new library welcoming children and their carers into a colourful space designed around their needs, interests and imaginations.

Located on the ground floor of the State Library's Spence Wing on North Terrace, Little Library will give children a place to read, talk, sing, play and discover.

Books sit at the heart of the experience, with a carefully selected collection of children's books available to browse and borrow. Families can settle in for a story, join a program, find a quiet corner or explore the space at their own pace.

The new space also builds on the State Library's history as the original home of Australia's first public children's library.

Children and families will also be able to take part in an evolving program of events and activities, alongside the everyday benefits of a public library, including access to books and resources.

The opening weekend will give families their first chance to explore Little Library and discover a new place for stories, creativity and connection in the heart of Adelaide.
