Barossa to host international flag football competition
The Barossa is set to welcome athletes, supporters and spectators from across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and beyond when it hosts Oceania's largest flag football competition, Capture the Flag.
More than 550 players and coaches are expected to travel to the region, joined by their families and supporters, creating valuable opportunities for local businesses while showcasing the Barossa as a destination for major sporting events.
Flag football, a variant of gridiron, has a strong international following with national and international competitions held around the world.
The sport is also set to feature as a discretionary event at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The Barossa Council is proudly supporting the event, which will be held at Nuriootpa Centennial Park.
Mayor Bim Lange said hosting a competition of this scale reflected the region's growing reputation as a destination for major events.
“It's great to see a new sport come to the region and one that has such a strong following internationally,” he said.
"Hosting this competition creates an opportunity for people to witness the ultimate showcase of athleticism and strategy with athletes from all over Australia and the world."
The event aligns with the first NFL game to be played in Melbourne in September and highlights the Barossa's ability to attract major events that deliver lasting economic and community benefits.
