Powerful exhibition exploring dementia comes to Port Pirie

31 August 2026
Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery will present Richard Lewer: Steve, a moving exhibition that explores dementia through art, memory and storytelling.

The National Gallery Touring Exhibition recently featured at the National Gallery of Australia and will be on display in Port Pirie from Friday 28 August to Sunday 8 November 2026.

At the heart of Steve is an animated film made from thousands of hand-painted images. It follows Steve and his family as they navigate a dementia diagnosis and its impact on their lives.

The exhibition also features paintings drawn from Lewer’s own memories. Everyday moments such as family dinners, celebrations, difficult conversations and farewells provide a window into the experiences that shape our lives.

Lewer is known for his compassionate approach to storytelling. Through Steve, he explores the fragility of memory and creates space for audiences to reflect on family, connection and the experiences of people living with dementia.

The exhibition will officially open on Friday 28 August from 5.30pm to 7pm, with light refreshments provided.

Guests will hear from Elspeth Pitt, Senior Curator, Australian Art at the National Gallery, and the exhibition will be officially opened by Port Pirie Regional Council Mayor Leon Stephens.
