Port Lincoln set to celebrate completion of $8.25m foreshore project
The redevelopment of the Port Lincoln Foreshore Plaza is the last stage of the $8.25 million Port Lincoln Foreshore Project, scheduled to be finished by this Friday 10 May.
To mark the occasion, the City of Port Lincoln is holding a celebratory event on the foreshore from 3pm to 5.30pm on Friday, including a live radio broadcast by Magic 89.9 FM, a free sausage sizzle, hot donuts, games and more.
Official speeches will be at 4pm at the Tuna Poler plaza area.
Port Lincoln Mayor Diana Mislov said the multi-pronged foreshore redevelopment, which was supported by $3.64 million of State Government funding, has been a significant undertaking for the council.
“Construction of the Port Lincoln Foreshore Project commenced in June 2022 with a focus on improving functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics, revitalising the coastal foreshore area into a vibrant contemporary waterfront destination,” Mayor Mislov said.
“We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to all the contractors for their efforts, dedication, and professionalism in completing the various stages of the project.
“It has been a monumental undertaking including weekend work, and we acknowledge the many challenges posed by the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We would also like to thank the community, especially the local businesses who have been affected with the temporary loss of carparking for their customers, for their understanding, support and patience and look forward to the many benefits the revitalisation of the foreshore will bring to our community.”
Contractors Kym Clarke Constructions and subcontractor Groundworks Landscaping undertook the works for the plaza overhaul, which include new pavement and a parallel drop-off lane outside the toilet facility, facilitating quick drops offs, ensuring safety, and improved accessibility to the shopping precinct and foreshore area.
Additionally, individual seating and timber amphitheatre seating has been added as well as new plantings to add greenery and shade.
Work is well underway to create an inclusive, all-abilities beach access, ensuring that the foreshore beach will be accessible to all residents and visitors.
About the Port Lincoln Foreshore Project
The Port Lincoln Foreshore Project was a flagship project of the Precinct’s Master Plan – CBD, Foreshore and Marina.
Throughout the various stages of the project, there have been several highlights, with the addition of a nature and adventure playspace and a youth basketball and netball half-court, providing families and youth with engaging activity spaces for play, exercise and social interaction.
The revitalisation of the Parnkalla Trail, including repairs to sections of the seawall, has enhanced peoples’ walking experience, and the inclusion of First Nations art and storytelling has added cultural awareness and richness to the foreshore through the playspace and along the trail.
