Blackwood set for landmark mixed-use development

16 October 2026
The former Blackwood Library site will be redeveloped into a mixed-use precinct, with the City of Mitcham selecting South Australian developer Buildtec to deliver new apartments and ground-floor commercial spaces.

Blackwood town centre is set for a major change, with plans for a new mixed-use development at the former Blackwood Library and adjoining nursery site on Main Road.

The proposal includes two connected multi-storey buildings, with commercial spaces at street level and apartments above. A range of housing options will be available, including affordable housing.

Blackwood Library services moved to Tiwu Kumangka on Young Street in 2023. The modern community hub now houses Blackwood Library, the Toy Library and Blackwood Community Centre, with spaces for learning, creative activities and community gatherings.

The former library building is expected to be demolished to make way for the new development.

The proposal aims to increase housing diversity, attract investment and create more opportunities for people to live, shop and spend time in the town centre.

The project will still need to meet the relevant planning approval requirements, including public notification where required.

With new homes, affordable housing and ground-floor businesses planned, the development could help shape Blackwood’s next chapter while supporting the needs of a growing community.
