A modern revival of a local icon as Thebarton Theatre reopens

20 October 2025
With an $8 million upgrade complete, Thebarton Theatre is ready to shine once again as it reopens to the public this month.

One of South Australia’s most beloved live music and performance venues, the Thebarton Theatre, has reopened its doors following a major transformation.

Thanks to a joint investment of $4 million each from the City of West Torrens and the State Government, and additional support from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, Stage One of the theatre’s redevelopment is complete.

The first stage focused on improving functionality and access for audiences and performers. The upgraded entrance and foyer create an impressive arrival experience, while the addition of a new bar and lounge areas make it easier for visitors to relax before and after shows. For the first time in its history, The Thebby now has a lift, providing full accessibility for all patrons.

Outside, a newly landscaped plaza space offers a welcoming area for people to gather, and the refreshed eastern façade highlights the theatre’s architectural character while maintaining its State Heritage-listed charm.

Known affectionately as The Thebby, the theatre holds a special place in South Australia’s history. Built by the former Thebarton Council and officially opened in 1928, the heritage-listed venue has been a community hub for nearly a century, from hosting civic events and dances to welcoming some of the biggest names in entertainment.

City of West Torrens Mayor Michael Coxon said the venue has long been a cultural landmark for the arts and entertainment industry in South Australia.

“This grand venue has become a cherished part of the West Torrens community, largely due to its unique blend of historical charm and modern entertainment.”

The new-look Thebby officially opened on 1 October 2025 with a special concert by Marcia Hines and Casey Donovan on 22 October 2025 to mark the occasion.
