Turning food scraps into garden gold in the Adelaide Hills
Two Adelaide Hills residents are enjoying a greener start to the gardening season after winning compost and mulch prizes for committing to compost more at home.
To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week, East Waste partnered with Peats and Adelaide Hills Council to encourage residents to make better use of their kitchen caddies, green organics bins, compost bins and worm farms. Community members who pledged to compost more food scraps and garden organics were entered into the prize draw.
Angela from Verdun and Aidan from Woodforde were the lucky winners, each receiving compost and mulch products made from materials collected through kerbside green organics bins.
Angela (pictured above) plans to use her prize on her flourishing vegetable garden, flower beds and trees, with a little help from her chickens to keep the soil healthy.
Aidan (pictured below) and his wife will use the compost to establish new herb planters before sharing any leftover products with family members to support their vegetable garden.

The initiative highlights how everyday food scraps and garden organics can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost instead of ending up in landfill. Whether it's using a kitchen caddy, green organics bin, compost bin or worm farm, every small action helps create healthier gardens and supports a more sustainable community.
Congratulations to Angela and Aidan, and thank you to everyone who took the pledge to compost more.
