Find out what is banned in 2025?
South Australia is rolling out its next phase of single-use plastic bans starting 1 September 2025. The updated rules now prohibit:
- pre-filled plastic soy sauce containers with a lid, cap or stopper, containing less than 30ml of soy sauce
- plastic cutlery either attached to or contained within a food container
- plastic drinking straws attached to a drink container
- pre-packaged expanded polystyrene (EPS) cups or bowls containing a meal.
South Australia introduced the first-of-its-kind single-use plastics ban in 2021, phasing out items such as plastic cutlery, drinking straws and plastic-stemmed cotton buds. The phased approach has given retailers and households time to adapt while reducing waste and protecting the environment.
To support a cleaner, greener state, South Australians, businesses and retailers are encouraged to find environmentally friendly alternatives that reduce pollution, lower carbon emissions and protect marine life.
These bans come on top of previous efforts. South Australia already prohibits items such as plastic beverage cups, lids, expanded polystyrene containers, thin produce bags and bread tags.
A planned ban on plastic fruit stickers has been postponed to manage industry concerns and align with national timelines.
