Inclusive ice cream themed playground opens at Largs Foreshore
With more than 122 playgrounds within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, and approximately 1 in 10 children in South Australia living with a disability, designing an inclusive space for children of various abilities was high on the list.
After hearing from students at Adelaide West Special Education Centre and Shaping Inclusion members to understand what they enjoyed most about playgrounds, Largs Bay School students then voted on the imaginative final design.

The result is a unique, fully accessible playground with fun features as well as new seating and shade.
So, let’s break it down, scoop by scoop, and see how the magic of ice cream has been transformed into a creative playground!
The new, fully accessible Largs Foreshore playground includes:
- Climbable soft serve ice cream cup with slide
- Inclusive mound slide
- Accessible trampolines
- Climbing tower with large tunnel slide
- Two swing sets
- Cherry sculptures
- Alternative communication boards
- Informative and sensory ice cream sculptures
- Ice cream scoop with monkey bars
- Banana split themed inclusive see-saw
- Accessible carousel
- Rubber soft fall ditch with domed climbing net
- Picnic setting.
The Changing Places accessible toilet on the foreshore will also be ready in the coming months.
