Bridging nature and adventure with upgraded Coastal Walkway at Hallett Cove
The 7.2 kilometre trail winds its way from Marino in the north to the Hallett Headland Reserve in the south, offering breathtaking views and a fresh perspective of the coastline’s rugged beauty.
With the completion of two new suspension bridges, this iconic trail has entered an exciting new chapter for locals and visitors alike.
The journey to these upgrades began several years ago when a structural audit revealed that sections of the walkway needed attention. Rather than simply replacing the ageing boardwalk, the City of Marion partnered with the state government to design two multi-million dollar suspension bridges which connect the pathways across the dramatic gullies at Grey Road and Kurnabinna Terrace.
Standing 25 metres above ground, the new bridges span 41 metres across Kurnabinna Gully and 39 metres across Grey Gully. Built with more than 800 linear meters of reinforced steel, the suspension bridge walkways are engineered to withstand the test of time, capable of holding up to 350 tonnes of weight.
Their sleek design seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape, offering walkers a new adventure and immersive experience as they traverse the cliffs.
The City of Marion has taken great care to ensure the environmental integrity of the area is maintained. More than 6,000 additional plants were introduced along this section of the trail, further enhancing the walkway’s rich natural landscape.
As walkers make their way along the path, they’re greeted by a variety of public and community art, including 33 large ‘art signs’ shaped like dolphins, fish, crabs, and traditional Kaurna shields, which add a touch of cultural significance to the experience.
The Coastal Walkway’s latest enhancements are part of a broader effort to make Adelaide’s coastline more accessible and enjoyable for all. With multiple entry points and varying levels of difficulty, the walkway caters to a wide range of fitness levels, making it a perfect destination for a family outing, a challenging hike, or a leisurely stroll with a four-legged friend.
Whether you’re a seasoned local or a first-time visitor, the upgraded walkway at Hallett Cove offers a new way to explore the stunning coastal landscapes of Adelaide’s south.
So, lace up your walking boots, grab your phone for some selfie-snaps and discover the beauty of the Marion Coastal Walkway.
