About
The City of Onkaparinga is South Australia’s largest metropolitan council, with more than 178,000 residents living across an area of 518 km2.
Located on the southern fringe of Adelaide, between 25 and 40 kilometres from the CBD, the area features rich cultural heritage, 31 kilometres of beautiful coastline, rolling hills, rural farmland and townships, suburban residential areas, commercial, retail and light industrial areas, and the world famous McLaren Vale wine region.
Local communities are vibrant and connected, with strong artistic and cultural expression. The local economy is driven by established and emerging small, medium and large enterprises, with wine, food and tourism activating the rural and coastal areas.
The name Onkaparinga comes from the word Ngankiparingga in the Kaurna language, meaning ‘women’s river place’.
