So, you know you want to be an Asset Maintenance Officer. How do you get started? And what’s next?

Qualifications and experience

Tradespeople like electricians, mechanics, painter decorators, carpenters and plumbers can put their skills and experience to good use in an Asset Maintenance role. Previous experience in handy work or construction is a plus.

You'll usually need a Class C driver’s licence, and may need a truck licence (HR), White Card or Workzone Traffic Management (WZTM) card depending on the job.

Tickets for operating civil construction plant (backhoe, skid steer, excavator, roller, grader, streetsweeper and more) can be useful, but you can also earn what you need on the job.

You may need to have a tertiary qualification, or you could gain one on the job through an apprenticeship.

Training and apprenticeships

You might be able to earn a diploma through a traineeship. Some training may be subsidised, which means the government would pay part or all of the course cost.
